RESUMO

This study was performed to verify the response of human bone-derived cells (HBDCs) to moisture-cured silicone-urethanes (mcSUUs) in vitro, as the first step toward using them as scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. Good surgical handling, tissue cavity filling, stable mechanical properties, and potentially improved oxygen supply to cells after implantation justify the investigation of these nondegradable elastomers. A set of various mcSUUs were obtained by moisture-curing NCO-terminated prepolymers, synthesized from oligomeric siloxane diols of two different oligosiloxane chain lengths, and two different diisocyanates (MDI and IPDI), using two different NCO/OH molar ratios. Dibutyltindilaurate (DBTL) or N-dimethylethanolamine (N-met) served as catalysts. After 7 days of culture, cell number, viability, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were determined, and after 21 days, cell viability and collagen production were determined. Material characteristics significantly influenced the cell response. The mcSUUs prepared with DBTL (widely used in the syntheses of biomaterials) were cytotoxic. The MDI-based mcSUUs were significantly more favored by HBDCs than the IPDI-based ones in all performed tests. MDI-based material with low 2/1 NCO/OH and short chain length was the best support for cells, comparable with tissue-culture polystyrene (with ALP activity even higher). HBDCs cultured on porous scaffolds from this mcSUU produced a tissue-like structure in culture. (c) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res, 2010.

RESUMO

There was presented an exstremely rare case of adenoma oxyphillicum of the larynx coexisting with the lung carcinoma. Diagnostical and medical conduct was throughly analyzed. It consisted such matters as detailed graphical examination, spliting of larynx, and radiotherapy and chemiotherapy of lung cancer. The authors want to call attention to limited use fullness of competent lungs X-ray in a-p projection in recognizing the early stadium of lung cancer.

RESUMO

Electron microscopical studies of primary syphilitic lesions showed intensive changes in the capillaries in the form of endothelial proliferation and extensive infilitration of different cells in the surrounding connective tissue. The degenerative changes in axon terminals could explain the painless course of primary induration.

RESUMO

Six skin biopsies of one patient, from foci of chronic lupus erythematosus in different stages of development of the disease and from unchanged skin were examined by electron microscope. The aim of the investigations performed was to check the presence of reticulotublar structures in these samples. Reticulotublar structures appeared in numerous quantities in early foci, while in scarred foci, as in structurally unchanged skin, they were, although always present, rare.

RESUMO

Vascular changes in the course of chronic lupus erythematosus were mainly characterized by a large, yet varying degree of proliferation of endothelial cells. In all cases examined the presence of tubular forms similar to paramyxoviruses was noted. The vascular basal membrane was noted to be either widened, segmentally separated or absent in places. Collagen fibres in these cases adhered directly to the endothelial cells. In the nuclei of endothelial cells of the infiltrate, "nuclear bodies" could be observed. In area surrounding capillaries oval concentrations of fibrilles 80 A in diameter were noticed.
